For the more common x-rays, the bite wing x-ray, we use intraoral sensors to take digital x-rays. These are the 2, 3, or 4 x-rays most people get to see if there are cavities between the teeth.
Sometimes we are asked not to take x-rays because of the radiation associated with them. Please be at ease because digital x-rays use only a fraction of the radiation that are associated with film based x-rays and even those type of x-rays have very low exposure. As for not taking x-rays, unfortunately, they are essential to properly diagnosing dental disease and we cannot skip this essential step. Please be assured that I will not take an x-ray unless it is needed. To reduce the number of x-rays taken, for years I have been using transillumination rather than
x-rays to look for cavities on the front teeth.
